Before learning how to check coolant levels, you may be asking yourself, “What is coolant?” Coolant is a fluid that transfers heat and regulates the temperature of the engine block and parts. Engine coolant contains an additive that ensures that it will not freeze below 32 degrees Fahrenheit and will not overheat above 212 degrees Fahrenheit. That said, this fluid is essential for safe travels around Dallas and Fort Worth. Now that you know what coolant is, read the rest of this guide from Sewell INEOS Grenadier to see how you should inspect coolant levels.
You do not have to open the radiator cap to check the level. Instead, check the markings on the side of the reservoir. If the liquid reaches the “full” marking line, you are good to go. If it does not, remove the radiator cap and add the coolant or a 50/50 mix of coolant/water. Read the bottle to see if it is premixed. It is also a good idea to inspect the hoses connected to the radiator for any leaks or damage.
Note: If you are adding more liquid to the cooling system, be sure the engine has cooled. Also, do not attempt to open the radiator cap while the engine is hot.
Coolant is thinner than oil but thicker than water. If you notice a sludgy appearance to the liquid, make a reservation at our service center as soon as possible. You can find our operating hours and directions here. A sludgy appearance is likely a sign that your vehicle has an internal gasket leak. Driving is possible, but a leaking gasket will drain the coolant quickly. This means the engine is at risk of overheating and being severely damaged.
Coolant levels deplete over time, so it is wise to check up on the cooling system every three to six months. Usually, the liquid is blue, green, yellow, or red. If it is brownish or even colorless, flush the system and replace the fluid.
